I'm a great fan of Man of St...Dear Mr. Cavill,

I'm a great fan of Man of Steel. I actually watch clips of it on Youtube (on my phone) quite regularly, as well as of The Count of Monte Cristo. As a film nut (I worked as a Greensman and tinkered with screenwriting), I wanted to share with you an idea for a film I've been mulling over. Basically, it is an honest depiction of imperial Roman citizens (and slaves) as well as the early (pre-Constantine) Christians, including their martyrs.

Imagine...if you will. That's 99% of the job, isn't it? Depicting Romans as they truly were, just slightly less barbaric than the barbarians they ransacked throughout Europe for so long. Draconian laws. Frequent murders. Torture. Slaughter. Obsessed with astrology (the "religion of the Romans") and sex. Filthy, odious, crowded, noisy Rome. Disease. Ignorance. Various cults. Misogyny. Rapine.

Then...we have these early Christians. What were they like? These lower-middle class fanatics who were allowed to write about their martyrs. Ever so slowly spreading their strange faith. Surely they met fierce, vehement opposition and criticism everywhere they went. Even murder. What were they like when they were devoured by lions? Or burnt alive? This allegedly impressed many Romans. But surely many were strange and desperate characters. No doubt many had sublime religious experiences. Baptism. Visions. Conversions. A far more humane way of life than the pagans had. But definitely, most definitely, a dark side as well. The strangeness of it. Human sacrifice, ritual cannibalism. Many things obvious untrue and absurd to modern common sense. Oh the mystery of it all!

Basically, I envision the film as taking a massive shit on popular conceptions of Roman civility (it was just another cruel Mediterranean empire) and early Christians (often crazed groupthink fanatics). Of course, it shouldn't be black and white. It probably should include a beautiful scene depicting a Christian's religious experience, and perhaps a Roman Stoic's nobility. I cannot think of any film that has treated this era with intellectual honesty. Not the golden age Jesus films, nor Ben Hur or KIngdom of Heaven, modern cheesy Christian films, etc. I would like it to do justice to contradictory scholarship such as Professor Bart Ehrman's work or the "four horsemen" (atheist authors like Sam Harris and the late Christopher Hitchens). Of course, the subject matter is sensitive. It concerns the faiths of billions of people. It should entertain, inspire, inform, and awe, but disappoint when necessary. Dispell evil myths. Tell the truth without fears of persecution or hurting the feelings of the devout.

So that's the idea in a nutshell. Something told me you might be interested in such a concept. For my part, I would love to collaborate with writers and researchers working on such a project.

Sincerely,
Mark Ekdahl

Mark Stuart Ekdahlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14164377915756290183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2549520145667483004.post-52199229427111829462022-07-28T09:51:32.493-07:002022-07-28T09:51:32.493-07:00Speedy recovery to Henry!!!
