Dominic Cooper Replaces Henry In 'Stratton'

 

GFM Films announced today that Dominic Cooper will take over Henry's role in Stratton, after creative differences led to him leaving the project in May:

Gemma Chan, Austin Stowell, Tyler Hoechlin and Tom Felton also star in the film, which starts shooting next week in Italy before moving to Rome and London.

Simon West is still on board to direct.

Back when Henry left the film, author Duncan Falconer spoke about his integrity and what a pleasure it had been working with him. We know this was a project close to Henry's heart, but also know there are better things to come. We'll be here cheering for him the entire time!

Author Addresses Henry's Exit From Stratton, Speaks Of His Integrity

A week after Henry and GFM Films parted ways due to reported creative differences over the Stratton script, author and screenwriter Duncan Falconer has seemingly sided with Henry:

In order to dispel certain misguided criticisms, I'd like to be clear that Henry and I are still good friends and we do communicate. He has always been, and remains, one of the most upstanding and correct individuals I have met in civvy street, and he is certainly a rare treat in the film business I can tell you. His integrity runs very deep indeed. In my opinion, he has been faultless in this project and an utter pleasure to work with. The project hit a serious bump in the road. I cannot even hint at the reasons, which I am sure you can understand. It's my firm belief that 'Stratton' is not over. There are just a few prickly hedges to cut down.

The author made the statement on his Facebook page, where up until last week he had been sharing updates on the project. Henry has not spoken publicly on the matter. 

As we've said before, we fully support Henry in whatever decision he makes in his career because just like Falconer mentioned.. his integrity shines through.

Today GFM Films announced through Screen Daily, that Henry has left Stratton over creative differences just days before filming was set to begin in Italy:

“But just before leaving Cannes last Friday we were informed by the production company that they wanted to push the start date back by around three weeks to finalise some additional casting and make some further fixes to the script.

“Then, during several meetings this week in London with both sets of producers including Henry Cavill, he told us he has decided not to shoot this script at this time. He had a different vision of what the film should be to us and the production team and wanted to delay production until September and shoot a different story and script.”

UPDATE: GFM Films tells Variety that Henry's move to leave the project, was specifically due to issues with the script:

“It is with great regret that we announce that Henry Cavill has pulled out of ‘Stratton’ due to creative differences on the script of the movie. With production due to commence next week, we wish to keep the production team together and Simon West as director so are working now to replace Henry. Production will be delayed whilst we do this. Further announcements will be made in due course.”

We support Henry in everything he does, and trust his decisions. Stratton was supposed to be the first project for his newly formed company, Promethean Productions. He'll soon be headed to San Diego to promote Batman v Superman at Comic-Con, and then turn around and promote The Man from U.N.C.L.E. which is set for an August 14 release. Trust us, you're gonna love, love, LOVE HIM as Solo.

“Guy is аn аmаzing filmmаkеr,” sаys Саvill, kееnly. “If I соuld dо еvеry mоviе with him frоm nоw оn I’d bе hаppy. Hе сrеаtеs thеsе fаntаstiс prоduсts but mаkеs surе it’s fun. Hе’ll bе plаying guitаr whilе thе саmеrаs аrе sеtting up, аnd yоu’ll bе thеrе mаking up sоngs.

“Hе’s а rеаl stоrytеllеr thrоugh сhаrасtеr,” hе соntinuеs. “If Tоm Сruisе wаs plаying Nаpоlеоn Sоlо hе wоuld hаvе tоld it thrоugh Сruisе’s strеngths. Аnd nоw I’m plаying it, hе’s tоld it thrоugh minе. I саn bе quitе sаrсаstiс, but in а lоt оf thе сhаrасtеrs I plаy thаt’s nоt sееn: Supеrmаn is vеry stоiс, hе’s а big bоy sсоut. If hе’s nоt yеt knоwn fоr his humоur, Саvill is сеrtаinly rесоgnizеd fоr his bоdy. After weeks of waiting for Stratton news, in the last 24 hours we've gotten more than plenty!

First came a look at Henry in the gym training for the film, as well as him as John Stratton (too much!). And the pics keep coming! -- Now we're apparently getting a peek at Henry during some flying lessons (we *think* it had to do with this stay). He seems to be owning it!... wonder why? ;)

This is a first look at Henry as John Stratton via GFM Film's promo at Cannes. Henry is looking fierce, and of course extremely HOT.

According to GFM Films, Stratton is set to begin principal photography June 2nd in Italy.

Here are the latest details:

A new script is now available and we believe this significant polish has added even more action & explosive excitement to the storyline and further improved each character’s story arc. With Principal Photography in Rome, Southern Italy & London imminent, Henry Cavill is immersing himself in his intensive training schedule, both with his personal trainer and Special Forces personnel.

We are not posting specific script information because we feel it gives away the plot, and we respect Henry's work too much for that. But today we did get a glimpse of Henry training for his role (don't miss) as John Stratton. You know he'll be bringing you his best Special Forces Operative when cameras roll.

Kisses For Everyone, Awaiting 'Stratton' Production News!

Has this been an awesome May or what? - We can hardly keep up with a busy Henry, who after raising funds for Durrell Wildlife at the Siam Cup, turned around and flew to Rome to promote The Man from U.N.C.L.E. In between we've gotten plenty of kissable moments, including that top one of Henry at the Jersey Rugby Football Club (we spot his trainer, Michael Blevins in the back!). Then came Francesca's sweet encounter with Henry in Rome.. #swoonworthy.

Next comes Stratton!

The Fairwater Head Hotel in Devon, where Henry has been training for the film, today shared this pic of Oscar with him. The staff called Henry "a lovely person" -- We're so glad they got to meet him!

According to director Simon West, Stratton is supposed to start filming this month. Production will be on location in Italy for a while, and it looks like some film students in Rome will get to help out. Just as we have in the past with The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Batman v Superman, we'll be bringing you production updates as we get them. We can't wait to get a first look at Henry as Special Boat Service operative, John Stratton!

'Stratton' Begins Filming In May, Could Be Out In Early 2016

Stratton director Simon West, recently did an interview where he revealed some exciting key details about Henry's character. He also shared a production update!

What’s next for you?

“I’m doing a film called Stratton in London with Henry Cavill. He’s a new British action hero, I’ve been looking for a counterpoint for Bond for a while, not someone like Bond, this is a Special Forces guy and it’s a very realistic film. He’s on a mission to protect London. Henry is Superman obviously, but this is a dark, complex guy, doing what he has to do to protect London.”

How far along are you with that?

“We’re just in preparation. We’ll start shooting in May. I’ve just got Henry at the moment, but there’s a huge talent pool of British actors. I’m enjoying being back at home, I’m usually off in Bulgaria and Canada or somewhere, it’s nice to be filming in London again. If all goes well, it’ll be out at the beginning of 2016.”

Henry's Trainer Shares Utah Photo, Fitness Advice

If you followed our updates on Henry's training for Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, you know Michael Blevins (@sworntoblack) was a main participant in that process. During filming in Detroit last year, Henry also showed up to support his trainer in several fitness competitions. Henry's work then continued in Utah and now in London, as Michael mentions in a new post on his site:

I was reminded on a run the other day of why I put my shoes on in the first place, it was not in fact to improve my VO2 max or change my ability to buffer lactic acid. In fact it wasn't conscious at all, it took running past a palace in Hyde Park for realization on the day to take place, and tomorrow it will change. Interestingly enough this is a daily occurrence, superficially the idea is to get fit, move faster, and move more, more times. The expression though that keeps this consistent is fostered in the aftermath or the unplanned. Suffering through purposeful effort builds resolution, relationships, a kindling of sorts for definition of our actions.

Director Describes Stratton As "Sort Of Counterpoint To Bond"

Here we thought Stratton director Simon West couldn't get any cooler.. and then he went and described his vision for Henry's character, while talking to Filmoria (via):

And what you can tell me about your next film?

The one I’m doing now, which is why I’m in London, is Stratton with Henry Cavill. He’s an SBS operative: that’s the Special Boats Service, which is like the SAS but more secretive and they would say cooler probably. But he’s actually a new, British action hero, a sort of counterpoint to Bond. It’s more realistic, more down and dirty but equally as interesting. I’m a huge Bond fan, but he’s our only British action hero and we need another one, and one who’s based here.

And just like that, West almost reached our Zack Snyder level of admiration. We like the sound of a British action hero who could wrangle with the best of them.. even 007.

At the moment I'm just prepping a film called Stratton with Henry Cavill.

The special forces thriller.

Yeah, the Special Boat Service character from a series of books by Duncan Falconer. It's set in London and a little bit in Italy. But it's an action adventure. We've all seen the SAS a lot, but not a lot of people know about the SBS, who've actually been constantly at war since WWII - all over the world. They're a busy service, but incredibly secretive - much more than the SAS, so not a lot of people know about them.

It's going to be exciting. I'm a big fan of Henry Cavill's work. I've been looking for a UK-based action character. There's Bond, and that's all we've got really. Even though Jason Bourne runs around Europe a lot, he's an American character. I think there's a real gap for a British, UK-based action hero, and I've been looking that for a while.

Then the perfect combination came up, first with this series of books and then with Henry Cavill also being interested in these books. So we got together on it, and that's the next thing this summer, and those other things you mentioned will be coming shortly afterwards.

Stratton is currently in pre-production. We'll continue to bring you updates as they come in.

What We Learned From The 'Stratton' Announcement

Now that we've had a few days to calm down after Simon West was announced as the director for Stratton, we've put together a few key points as we look ahead to the start of production.  

1) Production timeline.

We knew Stratton would begin filming sometime between April and June, and now we've learned cameras won't begin rolling until at least the end of June.

2) Busy, busy, busy!

Our first thought after finding out those productions details, was how is Henry going to fit everything in?! -- We can't imagine him not turning up at Comic-Con in early July, for what's sure to be an exciting Batman v Superman panel. That will take place roughly a month before The Man from U.N.C.L.E. opens on August 14. Between promotion for U.N.C.L.E. and Batman v Superman, U.N.C.L.E. premieres, and Stratton filming, we're thinking it's a good thing Henry is Superman.. because he's gonna be putting in a whole lot of flying time!

3) Stratton cast, director background. 

So now that Stratton has a director, the next step will be finding Henry's costars and we can't wait to hear who will be joining him in the film. We're also super excited about Simon West at the helm, because like Henry mentioned in the announcement, the famed director is known for "his ability to marry story-telling and action."

The main reason we are so excited for Henry and this project, is the fact that it's something he's been wanting to do for a while, thanks to his family ties to the military:

Henry will portray John Stratton, who Falconer created from his own experiences while serving as a Royal Marine. Henry is an ambassador for The Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund, and he's just begun his training for his role as the Special Boat Service operative trying to track down an international terrorist cell. The film is also the first project for his newly formed company Promethean Productions, which he's running with his brother Charlie and partner Rex Glensy. That's all we know so far, look for the latest updates on Stratton as production gets closer.

Stratton Director Revealed, Henry's Military Training Underway

It's the big news we've been waiting for. Today GFM Films and Amber Entertainment revealed that Simon West will direct Stratton. Henry's Promethean Productions is co-producing the film in which he'll play a Special Boat Service operative, and this is what he told Screen International about working with West:

“I’ve long wanted to tell a story about the British Special Forces and finally the opportunity has come around. Duncan Falconer’s work is fantastic and we are incredibly fortunate to be working with him so closely. We plan to convert the books to cinema as accurately as possible while keeping them topical. Simon West is a perfect match for this movie with his ability to marry story-telling and action, both of which are essential to do this project justice!”

As for West, he seems very excited to work with Henry:

“I have been looking for an opportunity to establish a new UK based action character for some time and Stratton fits the bill perfectly. The greatest challenge was always going to be who can play a character like that and bring depth and realism. I have followed Henry Cavill’s work for while now and I cannot imagine a better actor to take on this role. Henry is the reason this project is now possible.”

According to Screen International, the story follows Stratton as he and his team risk life, limb and national security to track down an international terrorist cell. Stratton is now reportedly set to start filming this summer in the UK and Italy, and just this week Henry began his military training for the role.

Details on that front are scarce, but that type of training usually takes place at the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines in Devon, UK. The Royal Marines Commando School is a TV series that follows what goes on at the centre:

The show has unprecedented access to arguably the most arduous basic military training programme in the world, going behind the scenes at the Royal Marines' Commando Training Centre in Devon.

We've included the first episode, so you can get a feel for what these recruits go through. Here are the rest of the shows (thanks Lucy).     

We don't know exactly what training Henry is taking part in, but we're guessing it might include initial testing that assesses his suitability for entry into the Royal Marines:

The course is composed of four Physical Assessments: A 3-mile run, Gym Test 1, the Bottomfield and a 2.5-mile section of the Endurance Course, which includes a 0.5-mile 'hare and hounds' chase, involving the remaining PRMC candidates to keep up with the PTI. The course lasts for a total of 3 days.

Local media reports suggest Henry is actually training in the Dartmoor, UK area:

There is a substantial army training camp on Dartmoor which can be reached via Okehampton, and is commonly referred to as "Okehampton Camp". It is managed by the Defence Training Estate, and used by a variety of military units, including the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines (CTCRM), Lympstone, Devon, and many cadet training units. 

Some of the most grueling work is said to take place on Dartmoor, with the Royal Navy mentioning how bad things got for their recruits there just a few weeks ago:

The exercise they undertook on Dartmoor recently coincided with some of the worst weather seen in England this winter. The recruits experienced a combination of heavy rain, cold temperatures, snow and high winds.

Author Duncan Falconer recently talked about putting Henry in the field, and getting him "wet, cold and tired." You can see exactly what he means in that video above (at about the 8:30 mark). Duncan Falconer Says Henry "Has A Lot Of Stratton In Him"

Author Duncan Falconer has shared a new update on his Facebook page, and it involves meeting Henry and sharing what he thought of him as Stratton. Just a few days ago, Falconer confirmed the film has found its director. 

"I met Henry for a beer a few days ago, our first meeting. I'm a no BS kind of person, as you might suppose, and I have to say, and I'm relieved to say, he is a first rate bloke. If he was otherwise, I'd just keep silent on the subject. So for all of his fans who actually wonder what he is really like, I can assure you, he gets my approval, and I'm tough to please. He has a lot of Stratton in him. Next stage is to get him in the field, get him wet, cold, tired, put a gun in his hands, and take it from there. I'm looking forward to that."

'Stratton' Update: Author Says Film Has A Director!

As Henry prepares to play SBS operative John Stratton in his next film which he's also co-producing, there's big news today!

Author Duncan Falconer, who wrote the books Stratton is based on, says the film now has a director.

As soon as an official announcement is made, we'll pass it on to you. Stratton is expected to start production in the spring.

As part of the revamp, the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film. The companies are not revealing details but that movie is likely to be Captain America: Civil War; the character was a major player in the comics storyline (..) There is also talk of looking for ways to integrate characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the Marvel movies are known, into future Spider-Man films.

And if that's not enough, Man of Steel's #1 fangirl is coming back!

Christina Wren just confirmed to Pittsburgh magazine that she's making an appearance in Batman v Superman. And while she couldn't share much, what she said made us all giddy!

I can tell you that I think it’s going to be badass! They’re just such an awesome team. The bits that I was on set for look fantastic; everyone in it is fantastic. It’s exciting; it’s high-energy; it’s high-action. They are addressing all of the things that they set up in “Man of Steel.”

While we wait for Batman v Superman promo to begin, Henry is expected to be busy filming Stratton in the spring. His company, Promethean Productions, is co-producing the film. This week his partner Rex Glensy is at the Berlin Film Festival, and he's been sharing updates.
