Cavill Conservation: Henry Throws His Support Behind Local Charity

Henry with Gerald Durrell Statue

We got a preview of what was to come Wednesday, when Henry was spotted doing press in preparation for the launch of his latest charity initiative. Now we know what it was all about. Today the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust (which has a great shot of Henry on its main page) unveiled cavillconservation.com at Henry's hometown of Jersey.

Henry worked with the staff all day, and you don't want to miss their feedback.

He also spoke to them about his visits to the Durrell Wildlife Park when he was younger, and why he felt he had to join them in their cause:

“I’m enormously proud to be part of a team that makes such a huge positive impact on the world. Durrell is an organisation with a mission I can really get behind. I feel that saving the diversity of life on our planet will be seen as increasingly important in the not-too-distant future. I genuinely believe that Durrell provide hope for those endangered animals that others may have given up on already. They ‘do the seemingly impossible’; I would be truly humbled if I help to make that possible.”

The camera catching some candid moments, as Henry interacted with the animals.

Henry felt a particular bond with a silverback gorilla named Jambo:

Henry told us that although his life so far has exceeded his wildest dreams, it’s his family that he’s most thankful for, as their love and support has been his foundation from the very start.

He also told us that family visits to Durrell Wildlife Park (then Jersey Zoo) made for some truly happy memories… and that he saw exactly the same love, support and family bonds amongst one of our own non-human (though very closely related) families; silverback gorilla Jambo, and his troupe. It resonated with him deeply, he said.

Hearing him describe how seeing Jambo in person – 200kgs of muscle – and learning how one of the strongest animals on the planet had gently cared for a five year-old boy who fell into the gorilla enclosure, we couldn’t help but become even fonder of our local hero. He doesn’t believe we should call him that, but that’s the only thing we disagree with him on!

There are many ways you can make a difference, including becoming a member of his now extended family at the Durrell Wildlife Park.

 Press Release

Henry Cavill lends super support to conservation charity Durrell.

Henry Cavill, the Jersey born actor who is currently filming ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has officially become a Durrell ambassador. Durrell was founded over fifty years ago on the Channel Island of Jersey by author and naturalist Gerald Durrell.

Cavill has many fond memories of childhood outings to the charity’s wildlife park headquarters on his native Island. Discussing the partnership Cavill said, “I’m enormously proud to be part of a team that makes such a huge positive impact on the world. Durrell is an organisation with a mission I can really get behind. I feel that saving the diversity of life on our planet will be seen as increasingly important in the not-too-distant future. I genuinely believe that Durrell provide hope for those endangered animals that others may have given up on already. They ‘do the seemingly impossible’; I would be truly humbled if I help to make that possible.

Henry has a genuine passion for the protection of animals and indeed the biodiversity issues affecting the planet today, and as an ambassador for the world-renowned conservation organisation he hopes to visit some of Durrell’s 50 field programmes across the globe. 2 As a pioneering charity, Durrell’s mission is ‘saving species from extinction’ and its dedicated teams primarily work with the most threatened species in the most threatened places around the world. The organisation successfully combines a wildlife park HQ; an
extensive range of field programmes and is a world leader in conservation capacity development. Together these organisational facets enable Durrell to deliver a unique approach to tackling today’s conservation problems.

Commenting on the support of Superman actor and local hero, Lee Durrell, Honorary Director and wife of the late Gerald Durrell said, “We are absolutely thrilled that Henry Cavill has pledged his public support for Durrell. We operate at the front line of conservation - striving to save the most threatened species around the world, and often our field teams are required to perform almost superhuman feats in their attempts to halt the
decline of some of the world’s most endangered species and their habitats. With Henry acting as a global ambassador for Durrell we are positive that we can raise awareness of our charity and the vital work we do.”

  4. No mention of his face-off with the bats?! (Isn't he inside a bat enclosure in that last photo?) I love his involvement with both of his announced charities. You can tell they are very personal for him...Not surprising from a sincere guy like Henry.

      I hadn't noticed - I'm sure no pun was intended :)

    2. We have the answer for that actually, via the charity's twitter: "@DurrellWildlife #HenryCavill meets the most #endangered #mammals housed at #DurrellWildlifePark – Livingstone's fruit #bats" -- we'll be adding the details on the post soon.

    3. You don't think that photo was an intentional reference to his current movie? In the interview with the local reporter she referenced the bats as a segue to talk about Batman v Superman. I think that pose was totally a *wink-wink*.

And what exactly do the "Durrell Delights" do? Tour guides? Hospitality hostesses? PR? Quite an archaic name for their group, but I'm sure they're ...well, delightful! LOL

    4. Hi all! Thanks for this excellent coverage of Henry's visit to Durrell. For all of you commenting on what a 'lovely soul' Henry has, I can confirm 100% – actually that's a perfect description. He's one of the nicest people I've met, regardless of any fame or fortune. His visit to the 'Island Bat Roost' happened because the enclosure is built using 100% recycled materials, heated by a biomass burner (in which we burn soiled animal bedding, itself made from shredded paper from the offices) and purpose built to allow the rarest fruit bats in the world to fully exercise their flight muscles. The movie link is coincidental, but it's awesome none-the-less!

As for the Durrell Delights, that's just a nickname for the lovely ladies who manage 'engagement' for our Wildlife Charity, so yes, PR, and they are indeed delightful. You should come and meet us in person. :)
