We Have A Lex For Our Supes: What We Learned From The Twitter Reaction

It certainly came out of left field..

Meet your new Lex Luthor! Warner Brothers announced today that Jesse Eisenberg has been cast as the villain in the YET TO BE NAMED (yes, we're using all caps psst.. Warner) Man of Steel sequel. Jeremy Irons will play Alfred. As you can expect, reaction to Eisenberg's casting in the iconic role was mixed.

After the dust settled, we decided to point out fun facts we learned on twitter today. Some of the criticism directed at Jesse (we're on a first name basis now) was that he looks too young to play Lex opposite Henry as Superman. But as many of you pointed out, they are the same age (30).

And yes..

LEX LUTHOR IS A HIPSTER.

But that may be exactly what director Zack Snyder is looking for. This is him describing his casting choice in the press release:

Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940. What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”

Unexpected directions?.. we like!, after all that's where Zack took Man of Steel and look where we are now. Entertainment Weekly makes a great case for Jesse as Luthor, so give them a read

One thing we found pretty interesting, is that Henry's publicist is very much in the business of representing DC superheroes and their counterparts.

Publicist to the stars Jennifer Allen now reps the Old Batman (Bale), the new Superman (Cavill) and the new Luthor (Eisenberg). BRAVO!

Go Jen! (as we ponder if we made the wrong choice by going into news writing instead of publicity).

So far 2014 has been a roller coaster ride for fans, but we have to say we are enjoying every second of it. And then there's this.

Best thing that ever happened to and the universe was this delay.

There's always a silver lining. Keep up with everything Man of Steel 2 in this handy link we've put together for you. Stay tuned for the latest out of Detroit, where Henry is now preparing to become the Man of Steel once again.. beard included we hope ;)

We Have A Villain! Jesse Eisenberg Is Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons Will Play Alfred

BURBANK, Calif. (via Business Wire)

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Jesse Eisenberg has been set to star as Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons will play Alfred in the upcoming Zack Snyder untitled Superman/Batman film. The dual announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Snyder stated, “Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940.

The director added, “As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure. He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne.”

Eisenberg received Academy Award®, Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild Award® and BAFTA Award nominations for his starring role as Mark Zuckerberg in David Fincher’s “The Social Network.” He also starred in Woody Allen’s “To Rome with Love” and Louis Letterier’s “Now You See Me.” He next appears in “The Double” and “Night Moves.”

Irons won the Academy Award® for his portrayal of Claus von Bülow in “Reversal of Fortune.” His work in the film also garnered him a Golden Globe Award. He won an Emmy Award and a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award® for his performance in the TV miniseries “Elizabeth I,” opposite Helen Mirren, and recently starred on the small screen as Rodrigo Borgia in Neil Jordan’s highly acclaimed Showtime series “The Borgias,” for which Irons earned a Golden Globe nomination. He was recently nominated for a SAG Award® for the PBS Great Performances television miniseries “The Hollow Crown,” for his performance as Henry IV.

Snyder’s film stars Henry Cavill, reprising his role as Superman/Clark Kent, Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince. The film also reunites “Man of Steel” stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.

The new film is currently being written by Chris Terrio, from a screenplay by David S. Goyer. Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder are producing, with Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Wesley Coller, David S. Goyer and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.

The film is set to open worldwide on May 6, 2016, and is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, Batman characters created by Bob Kane, and Wonder Woman created by William Moulton Marston, appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment.

Five Things We Learned From Latest Fan Encounter In Detroit

Hello longer hair and scruff, is this a look we'll be seeing in Man of Steel 2?

It's been a busy past few days here at Henry Cavill News, after Henry was spotted during an outing in his temporary home of Detroit.

What started as a sweet story of him learning sign language turned into a fan boy/girl's dream, after the pics and details from that night came out. (Again, thanks to our reader for letting us know).

Here are the five things we learned from that fan encounter at a suburban Detroit bar Friday night:

1) Despite what you may have read online, according to Gjonnyboy on IMDb, there's no major chaos going on behind the scenes of Man of Steel 2:

Given all the new seemingly negative word around the development; I wanted to reassure anyone who even remotely cares that MOS2 is on like donkey kong. I got the word from the man himself.

2) Filming on Man of Steel 2 could have already started. When Gjonnyboy shared what he claims Henry told him, he mentioned "they have been filming in Pontiac." As you know that is where the Michigan Motion Picture studios are located, but according to Warner Bros. filming isn't supposed to start until at least April. Deadline later reported the major players have been "summoned" to Detroit for the start of filming. Gjonnyboy's account seems to support the Deadline claim.

3) Henry's beard and longer hair could be a big clue about filming. You guys definitely noticed it and provided some theories.

His hair is definitely longer! Does this mean Supes is getting his trademark curl back?

Curl is not enough, i wanna MULLETS

If they have Doomsday...in comics, during recovery, his hair grows long. Perhaps they are doing this story & filming first?

Because we have a beard too. He wouldn't have a beard unless something happened, right? :) hmmmmmm!

Elen's theory is not bad, but we also find Latino Review's guess pretty appealing:

Exiled Superman?

Look at Cavill. He’s got his “scruffy, emo Clark” facial hair on- complete with neck fur! If filming is truly underway, that means he has this look in the scenes they’ve been filming. Might Clark be doing a cross-country “walk of shame” after the destruction of Metropolis? Maybe.

Now the fan who met Henry also mentioned he's been doing some "heavy training," so he could just be letting the scruff grow while he goes about his business. But considering that we hadn't seen that look on him for quite a while, we're thinking there's a chance filming could be underway.

4) Mlive's Eric Lacy talked to someone who met Henry over the weekend and tweeted that he could be in Detroit for "up to 10 months." Could that mean back to back filming of Man of Steel 2 and Justice League? - it certainly adds fuel to that fire.

5) The most important thing we learned, or really just reconfirmed.. is that Henry is an absolute gem and very deserving of wearing the Superman suit. The way he carries himself whenever he meets his fans, really does remind us why we do the work we do. Proud to support such an outstanding guy.

Man of Steel 2: "Interesting Camera Tests & Photo Shoots So Far"

Costume designer Michael Wilkinson talked to Entertainment Weekly about what he has in store for fans in Man of Steel 2:

What can we expect from those Batman vs. Superman costumes? Will you stay true to the original designs for Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman?

I’m not really at liberty to talk about the details of everything, but suffice to say we really respect the histories of all of these characters. We’re all very reverent about the iconic graphic nature of these characters and their costumes. We see ourselves as part of the natural lineage of how these characters are being portrayed through out the ages and our goal is to create something relevant and exciting for today’s audiences and something that works for this thrilling cinematic universe that our director Zack Snyder is creating.

What kind of research are you doing? What’s the process like when you’re designing something so iconic?

You really dive into the source material. We’re looking at all of the different ways these characters have been portrayed over the ages. We’re looking hard into Zack’s script and working out what makes sense as far as telling the story — who these people really are and what they represent, how to make sense of them in today’s world. It’s an interesting, multilayered design challenge.

When do you think the public might get their first peek at the costumes?
Ooh! Our film just got pushed. It’s now not being released until June or July 2016. I don’t know. We’re been having some interesting camera tests and photo shoots so far. I’m not exactly sure what dates we’re going to get them released, but I’m sure Warner Bros. has it all worked out.

Wilkinson has confirmed Henry's Superman suit will be "tweaked." Stay tuned for the latest as production news comes in from Detroit.

Fan Shares Details & Pic After Meeting Henry Cavill In Detroit

Nice to see Henry hanging out in Detroit before the start of filming on Man of Steel 2. There's been a few sightings of him since he arrived in Michigan this month. Over the weekend he caught up with some cool musicians and now Gjonnyboy (via IMDb) shares his account from that night:

I live in Detroit MI. The other night I was hanging out in Ferndale (suburb of Dtown) when I got a txt from a friend of mine that read "Henry Cavill is at (..) right now." Anywho.... I Spock ran from the bar I was at over (..) and there was Cavill just hangin at the bar with his trainer! I made a fool of myself quoting the movie haha! "We've had a child Zod. A boy child." lol lol lol hahaha! He was an awesome dude. We laughed it up, we high fived, it was gang busters! (..) Given all the new seemingly negative word around the development; I wanted to reassure anyone who even remotely cares that MOS2 is on like donkey kong. I got the word from the man himself. Ciao!

Yes that's me and Cavill in the profile pic btw....

Gjonnyboy later shared another pic and more details about meeting Henry.

What else can I tell you? Well.... He really is massive! I'm about 6'2 and he is just a smidge shorter. Half an inch if that. and he has to weigh (estimating) 220lbs. I'm around 160 so.... Haha! It was impressive. He was not drinking, because he is still doing some heavy training. His trainer is the one who took the pic (..) they have been filming in Pontiac. He's really very friendly and very humble. It was his idea to take the pic. I was too busy ranting and quoting the movie to even think about documenting it! Haha.

Henry definitely knows how to make an impression. Go Superman!

UPDATE: Eric Lacy who shared our report on MLive says he's now talked to a guy who met Henry, adding: "Looks like Superman could be in #Detroit up to 10 months" (let the back to back rumors continue).

Filming updates as we get them, in the meantime catch up on everything we know so far about Man of Steel 2. Exciting times ahead!

Thanks for the heads up guys.

Henry Spotted Out In Detroit, Settling Into His Temporary Home

UPDATE: 1/30: Sooooo, it sounds like things went a little bit different than what we initially heard and reported on. But it was all good in the end. Read more at Celebuzz.

We're happy to hear that Henry is settling into his new temporary home in Detroit, as he prepares to start filming the Man of Steel sequel (any day now according to the latest report).

Last Saturday a fan posted this picture with Henry at a suburban Detroit bar. He was spotted again last night, this time hanging out with music video director Adrean Mangiardi and musician Mark Levin. They make videos in American Sign Language.

learned a little bit abt deaf culture tonight. Right ? #2014

he was just hanging out and drinking like the rest of us. Just another nice fella

Adrean shared that Henry took the time to learn some sign language as he chatted with his group. If you keep up with our updates, you know that's not the first time he's done that. Back in August he practiced some sign language with a fan while hanging out at a London bar (below).

pghyland: With Henry Cavill @ Bodo's Schloss - I taught him a bit of Sign Language- a great guy! #manofsteel#superman #henrycavill #bodosschloss#randomnight #awesome

Need more proof that he's an all around great guy? check out all of these fan encounters from the past year.

We love seeing Henry out and about because the feedback from everyone that meets him is always so positive. Seems the same is already happening in Detroit. Enjoy your time there Superman.

Deadline: "Main Players Summoned To Start Work Right Away"

Deadline today is reporting that Man of Steel 2 production is not being delayed after all. In fact according to what they heard, it's starting soon:

While Warner Bros. recently pushed the release date for the movie from 2015 to 2016, word is that production is not being delayed and the main players have been summoned to start work right away.

You can read why they came to that conclusion, but keep in mind it was the studio that said production had been delayed until at least April. Of course that could have changed from a week ago when they made that announcement. We're following the latest and will keep updating you as we get more information.

Man of Steel: Kevin Costner Talks Playing Superman's Dad

It's the scene that made us cry and we totally blame Kevin Costner. We don't think we're spoiling anything by saying his death in Man of Steel was a turning point in Clark's life. Henry & Kevin's delivery of those emotional moments really captured the father and son bond the two characters shared, despite Clark not being Jonathan's biological son. Recently Costner talked to Den of Geek about his chance to be Superman and how instead he ended up playing his father.

The funny thing for me, which highlights the idea of a career, is that maybe there’s a moment early in my career when I could have played Superman. I don’t know whether I could have gotten the curl right! But time tells you when you can play his father, and those things are changing for you.

I don’t think of it that way, but I think I don’t run away from our history, the good or the bad of it. I think… I’m not Superman’s biological father obviously, but I like to think I gave him the DNA for his character and how he behaves as a person. I haven’t ever tried to do that [represent a wholesome value system] purposefully. People just see you in a certain light.

While we don't expect to see Costner in the Man of Steel sequel, you never know. The cast and crew will be back to film at the Kent Farm now being rebuilt at the same location where it was before. A nearby cemetery is also expected to be used in the movie. And as you know, the last time we saw Clark there, he was reminiscing with his mom about Pa Kent.

Henry is now in Detroit busy preparing for Man of Steel 2, that after being delayed is set to begin filming in the spring. Keep checking back for updates, because we'll be bringing them to you as we get them.

A Bumpy, Dusty Ride With Henry Cavill?.. We Are So In!

Former commando sniper Aldo Kane, got to work with Henry during the Driven to Extremes shoot in China. Today he released this never-before-seen candid clip from that trip to the hottest place on earth and it's full of awesome. We won't even tell you how many times we've watched it wishing that was us riding shotgun with Henry (it rhymes with 'many'). Enjoy.

"Riding Shotgun with Superman --Henry Cavill."

See the pics from the show and read the interview with Aldo. Thanks for sharing the new video! - cap (via).

'Man of Steel 2' Director Spotted In MI, Wonder Woman "Filming In May"

You thought a production delay on Man of Steel 2 would mean no filming updates?.. it's the other way around! - this is a first look at director Zack Snyder at Michigan State University in East Lansing today. Our *guess* is he's there to check out locations/settle details for an upcoming Batman vs. Superman shoot, especially after reading Athletics director Mark Hollis' caption on the pic.

Great to have on campus. Is it a clue? I don't know ....

Last fall we were lucky enough to be at East Los Angeles College, where the first scenes of Batman vs. Superman were filmed. It involved a game between Gotham City University and Metropolis State (check out our exclusive video and pics). At the time, word was the rest of the scene involving Henry & Ben would pick up on location somewhere else. Wonder where that could be? ;)

While at Michigan State, Zack checked out the Broad Art Museum, that also looks like a potential location for Man of Steel 2 (UPDATE: The Museum has confirmed Zack was there checking out the space//the Lansing State Journal has more). We're sure soon all will be revealed.

Henry was spotted in the Detroit area last weekend, just a few days after photographer Clay Enos and director of photography Larry Fong took this pic together in Michigan. So it's fair to say that delay or no delay, it's hustling time for the cast and crew of the Man of Steel sequel. Mlive.com did get this update from the Michigan Film Office:

"Because of the schedule changes, filming will likely start sometime this spring," wrote Michigan Film Office spokeswoman Michelle Grinnell in an e-mail to MLive.com.

Grinnell said in the e-mail Warner Bros. hasn't hired a unit publicist for the filming in Michigan - yet. She also added that the Michigan Film Office can't comment on timing, locations and other filming matters once plans are confirmed.

While they can't comment on timing, the stars of the film sure can. According to Batman-news.com, Gal Gadot confirmed she's signed a three movie deal with Warner Bros. (Variety says the deal includes a standalone Wonder Woman movie). Gadot also reportedly gave an update on when she's expected to begin her Wonder Woman work on Batman vs. Superman.

They also revealed that Gadot is scheduled to start filming the Man of Steel sequel in May, which lines up with the production delay that Warner Bros. announced last week.

Henry's trainer is now busy working with Gadot as she prepares for her role as Wonder Woman. We can't wait to see her transformation.

Ben Affleck has picked up a few more endorsements for his role as Batman. Chuck Lorre gave him a very public thumbs up after a bathroom encounter - watch the funny reaction from Ben, while superhero icon Stan Lee says "he'll be wonderful" (via Man of Steel Fan Page).

Finally, how about some Stephen Amell in the Justice League film?  he recently spoke with Fandango about his chats with the studio (UPDATE: Amell denies specific chats took place) involving that possibility:

"All we have to do for something like that to happen, or even be a possibility, is continue to take care of business with our show and then we put ourselves in a position – but the important thing is our show. I have had discussions, but I think the gestation process for this project is a lot slower than most people think. I mean, they haven't even shot the next one. They haven't even shot a frame of the movie before the movie everyone thinks is the Justice League movie!"

So what kind of chemistry would Arrow have with the Man of Steel? Amell shared his thoughts with us, when we spoke with him at Comic-Con.

There you have it, busy news day with Batman vs. Superman pre-production underway in Michigan. Look for updates as we get them!
