Just In: Henry to Attend Laureus World Sports Awards

Press release:

Henry Cavill, widely acclaimed for his role as Superman in the highly successful film Man of Steel, will be swapping his blue tunic and red cape for more formal dress to present an Award in Shanghai’s Grand Theatre next week during the Laureus World Sports Awards.

Cavill, who will shortly be seen in Guy Ritchie’s film Man from UNCLE and has recently completed the filming of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, said: “It will be such an honour to be in the same room as these great sportsmen and women. They really are supermen and superwomen who achieve amazing feats year in, year out. As a sports enthusiast, I am looking forward to being part of such a special occasion.”

Ha Ji-won, star of a succession of blockbuster films and TV shows, including the KBS’ historical drama Hwang Jini, SBS’ romantic comedy Secret Garden and Empress Ki from MBC, has won a succession of international awards. During the shooting for The King 2 Hearts, she completed her own martial arts stunts without a double and has performed sports aerobics, boxing and table tennis in other productions.

Henry Cavill made his feature film debut in The Count of Monte Cristo. He went on to star in Tristan & Isolde and Stardust, then Whatever Works for director Woody Allen and Immortals for director Tarsem Singh. On the small screen he starred in the Showtime series The Tudors for four seasons. He will next shoot Stratton, based on a series of novels by Duncan Falconer, in Europe this summer.

Among the sporting greats who have previously been named as winners of Laureus Awards over the last 15 years have been Usain Bolt, Sebastian Coe, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Alex Ferguson, Lewis Hamilton, Kelly Holmes, Yao Ming, Rafael Nadal, Pelé, Steve Redgrave, Ronaldo, Michael Schumacher, Kelly Slater, Shaun White, Serena Williams, Liu Xiang and Zinedine Zidane.

Guests who have attended previous Awards Ceremonies in the past have included David and Victoria Beckham, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx, Jackie Chan, Thandie Newton, Clive Owen and Eva Longoria.

The last time Henry was in Shanghai, he was there to premiere Man of Steel in June of 2013. Don't miss all the great moments from that stop (1/2/3), and look for complete coverage next week as Henry attends the Laureus World Sports Awards on April 15!

  1. His look in China for the Man of Steel promo tour was the best. The Armani suit and the striped shirt - yummy. The black sweater - umpf. I'm going to stare at these pictures for awhile.

    1. That Armani suit was the best!

But he really looked great in every stop of that tour. That Ermenegildo Zegna suit in Sydney and the Japan and Taormina ones were standouts as well. Can't wait to see what he wears this time.

  2. He always looks great casual or dressed up but I'm hoping we see an open collar again.

  3. This is great news! One question though as I am confused by the press release. Is Henry presenting this award alongside this Korean actress or presenting it to her? Excited to get new pics!

    1. It sounds like he's presenting an award to her? but you're right, the press release is confusing. Let you know when we figure it out.

    2. I was watching the 2013 and 2014 highlights on YouTube and I'm guessing Henry will first come onstage to present the award and then this Korean actress will come on stage to give the award. That's what they did with celebrities in the past. I bet he is presenting the best action award!

    3. Just watched last year's highlights and you're probably right. Also kept thinking that Henry would be a fabulous host. It looks so fancy!
